How to Reset Kenmore Washing Machine
Factory Reset
Like any other electrical appliance, the first thing you need to do when resetting your Kenmore Washing Machine is Switch it OFF from the power source if it is hard-wired. If not, you can unplug it to cut OFF the power supply. Cutting OFF power guarantees your safety while working on the machine.
Now, wait for a few minutes before turning ON the machine. The waiting allowance gives your Kenmore washing machine capacitors time to discharge and clear minor glitches. After the wait, plug your cable back, Turn ON the switch, and press the machine’s start button. Wait a few seconds and watch if the machine will start normally.
Sometimes, after resetting the washer, it might display some codes you can refer to the manual to understand the meaning. Some common codes include:

Reset Kenmore Washer, Lid Lock
Again, you must start by turning OFF the washer from the primary power source or disconnecting the cable from the main switch. After cutting OFF the power supply, leave it for a few minutes to reset. At this point, the lid can start working after an effective internal system reset. Alternatively, you can firmly open and close the cover to reset it.
The lid should unlock; if it doesn’t, there might be some electrical or mechanical issue. You can further inspect for lid lock damages, switch assembly, and even door strikes. Reset The Belt
If you want a successful Kenmore washing machine reset, you must inspect and adjust the belt. Assuming you have already unpowered the washer, open the lid to access the drum and belt. Look if you can spot any possible damages or wear. In case of any cracks or stretches, you must replace the belt.
If the belt has some loose or tension sign (too tight), you must adjust it. Try locating the motor and the washer’s pulley system by removing a panel at the back. Now loosen the mounting bolts to separate the motor.
Carefully move the motor to adjust the belt’s tension. You can pull it away from the drum to tighten it or push it towards it to loosen it. At this point, the belt should have a slight amount of give when you press it.
After a successful adjustment, you can now tighten the bolts. Rotate the drum to ensure you correctly align the pulley and motor shaft. Also, check that it sits at the centre and will not slip off the pulley at work. You have now adjusted the belt and can directly plug the washer into the power source.
Reset The Motor
Resetting your Kenmore washing machine also involves resetting the motor. If your washer is filling but not agitating or spinning, chances are your motor ran into an error code that needs a reset.
Start by plugging off the washer’s cable to cut OFF power for about 5 minutes. After the wait, plug the power back in; the washer gives you 30 seconds to lift the lid and close it six times.
Once you lift the lid, the washer gives you 12 seconds to repeat. Lift the lid for about 4 inches. The opening and closing reactivate the switch and restart the motor. You can turn on the load to confirm that the motor has reset. Now, it should agitate and rotate.
Reset The Water Inlet Valves
Besides resetting the belt, motor, and lid lock and doing a factory reset, you should also consider
resetting water inlet valves. You need to troubleshoot the valves and, if necessary, replace the old valves with new ones.
While your machine is plugged OFF from the main power/ switch, ensure an efficient water supply to your washer. Check if the water faucets connected to your machine are and that the water lines are not blocked. If your valves have filters, clean them for easy water flow.
Next, examine the inlet hoses for any leaks, damages or kinks. If some of them have worn out and have some, you can replace them with new ones. Also, remember to test your water pressure. Ensure that the pressure reads at least 20 PSi. If it is low, consider installing a water pressure booster pump.
After the water pressure, check for any clogs. That is, any debris or sediment deposits that lead to poor water flow. If there are any, clean them by running a cleaner through a cycle. It will break down detergents and mineral buildup. You can also use vinegar with warm water to flush out any remaining residues.
Reset Water Level
To reset the water level:
- Keep the machine powered ON.
- If you are washing a large load, select a large load, turn the washer and let it start filling. If the water continues filling and does not stop agitating, you must switch OFF power from the main switch.
- Check the water level switch if the water stops flowing in after switching OFF.
At this point, you either have a bad water level or switch a clog.
Empty the water by putting a bucket on the floor and a drain hose into the bucket. Take it all out and turn off the water inlet faucets to turn the water supply into the machine.
Next, set the spin cycle on the timer and turn the timer ON. Turn ON the washer from the main switch and let it drain the remaining water out. After the washer is empty, check the water levels switch. At this point, you will have reset the water level.
