Just like everything else, shoes can get old. Your pair of sneakers that you’ve had for years or your favorite sandals that you wear every day in the summer won’t stay brand new, no matter how well you treat them. As the shoes age, the wear and tear on them increases until they can’t take it anymore. If you have shoes that have a tear in them, don’t be scared. There are many varying shoe materials, but in general you can fix the tear in a few ways. Here’s how to fix torn shoes.
How To Fix Torn Shoes
If you own a mesh pair of shoes and you probably know and it isn’t the strongest material at times. Mesh is made out of nylon at the expense of durability. If you’ve gone for a walk in running or sports shoes and you stub your toe on something, you’ll likely have a hole or tear in the mesh.
Shoe mesh should be repaired so you can retain the visual appeal of your shoes. If you pay a lot of money for a pair of shoes, you wouldn’t want to be caught out with holes or tears in them. Also, taking care of your shoe mesh is very crucial to upholding a good impression. Many people judge you based on looks and even though that’s wrong, you still want to keep that in mind when you go outside. Most importantly if left damaged and untreated, your mess could be susceptible to mold and bacteria. The bacteria will cause an odor and this is not something that you want to walk around with especially if you’re around other people.
Mesh is used to keep your shoe light and breathable, but this means that you’re going to end up with a tear in it.
The best way to repair torn mesh on shoes is by using patches, buying sewing kit or using quilting irons to apply the patch to the damaged area. For small tears, you can use the iron method but for larger holes you need to sell the patch on to the area using a special technique.
If you want to fix your mesh, you’ll need a mesh repair patch. You match the size of the hole in your shoe mesh. You also need a quilting iron or a sewing kit.
Small tears are easier to deal with and fixing them shouldn’t be a complex process. Small tears occur as a result of daily use and all you need is a cotton ball, alcohol, a couple of mesh netting patches (View on Amazon) and a sturdy surface.
Check your alcohol-soaked cotton ball and clean the damaged area of the machine. Let the alcohol dry and then cut the netting patches to a size that fits the area. You want to leave 1/4 of an inch to spare in both width and length. Put your hand on the table or flat surface and hold one patch over the affected area. You can rub it hard together to form a connection between that mesh material and the patch. You can take the backing off the sticky patch and replace this other patch on the other side of the machine. Rub hard to create a bond and make sure it sticks. After that you’re done and your mesh is fixed.
If you have a big tear, you’re going to need a sewing needle and the same products. After you clean the affected area with an alcohol-soaked cotton ball, you need to thread your sewing needle with the appropriate thread. You want to use nylon for nylon mesh and polyester for polyester mesh. Knot the end. Sew the edges up as close as possible while holding the edges of the affected area. You’re going to cut two pieces of mesh netting patches to be an inch larger than the chair. Then make sure they form a bond together after you rub them together and do this on both sides. You should have your large tear fixed in no time.
Any Other Shoe
If your shoes are made of canvas then you don’t need to be as careful and you can use a different form of repair to fix your shoe. Whether your shoes are made of canvas, leather or suede, this fix should work for you. For this fix, all you need is a popsicle stick, fabric scissors, a towel, a soft sponge, and Shoe Goo (View on Amazon).
For this fix, you should keep in mind that you don’t need to use shoes. You can also use gorilla Super Glue. This is a versatile product that’s waterproof and temperature resistant. It works on materials like wood and metal but it’ll also work great on your canvas or leather shoe. It dries clear so it won’t affect your shoes appearance. It’s super easy to apply and it has an amazing reputation, so you can always opt to use Gorilla Glue (View on Amazon).

It’s a quick fix for separate soles and broken heels, but all you have to do is be careful not to get it on your skin. If you need to do a quick shoe repair, then this will do just fine.
Here are the instructions for repairing your shoe with Shoe Goo, but you can apply it to any other shoe glue.
1. Uses fabric scissors to make sure that the place where you’re applying the Shoe Goo is free from any loose strings or excess fabric. This will make sure the glue sticks better and lasts longer on the shoe.
2. Wet the sponge and rub the area to clean the tear in the shoe.
3. Once it’s free of any excess material and cleaned, then you can apply the glue directly on the shoe. Gloves are recommended for this, but they are not required. You should not squeeze huge amounts of Shoe Goo on to the shoes. More is not better in this case. You can use a popsicle stick to apply the Shoe Goo.
4. Spread the Shoe Goo on the area using a popsicle stick, and for the best appearance, make sure that the application is as smooth as possible. Don’t get the Shoe Goo anywhere else besides the rip so that it can be thinly applied.
5. Let your shoe dry for at least 24 hours, but for maximum strength, let your shoes dry for 2 to 3 days.
6. Once your shoe is completely dry, you can wear your shoe. Your shoes should fit the way it did before and the tears should not be too evident. If you apply the Shoe Goo correctly, it will only be a thin line noting where you applied it on the area.
Shoe Goo is something you want to keep on hand especially if you own a lot of different kinds of shoes. Because it can be used on varying shoe materials, it’s definitely something you want to have with you so that you can do at home shoe repairs.
