Why the Garage Door Remote Has Stopped Working

The most common reason why the garage door remote will stop working is because of a dead battery. The battery in the remote sends power by completing the circuit and this allows the remote to function and communicate with the garage door opener. If the battery is dead, it’ll need to be replaced.

If you have a few garage door openers and you’ve noticed that all of them have stopped working, chances are the door antenna isn’t attached properly to the garage door and needs to be reset. To reset this, you can try unplugging the garage door opener from the wall.

Important: As a homeowner, realizing that you need to waste another Saturday waiting for the landlord or handyman to come over to fix another damaged appliance is frustrating. Replacing the Battery

A lot of people forgot that the only thing allowing the remote to function is the cell or batteries that are inside the remote. If you’ve noticed that the remote has stopped working suddenly, you should check if there are batteries inside. If you’ve noticed that the weight of the remote has changed recently this is a huge indicator that the remote has no batteries. If you want to check the batteries in the remote, you’ll need to remove the screws on the remote then lift the cover so you can access the battery. If the remote has no screws, then you can easily lift the cover open to access the batteries. Once you’ve got the cover open, you can check if the remote uses AA or AAA batteries (View on Amazon). If you have any in the house, you can replace the old batteries with the new batteries. If the remote uses round batteries, then you’ll have to go to an electronic store and look for batteries that are the same size.

Check the Battery Contacts

Another thing you’ll want to check is the contacts inside the battery case that allows the circuit to complete. You’ll need to check if these contacts are worn out or wet – if they are, they can prevent the electrical current of the batteries from reaching the circuit board inside the remote. If the contacts look discolored, or they’re wet, you’ll need to remove any debris on it as well as water. You can polish the contacts with sandpaper if you find that they’ve built up debris and rust that’s stopping the current from flowing.

Clean the IR Unit

There’s an IR unit on the remote control and the opener that allows them to communicate with each other – the IR signal travels to the opener so it can receive the signal and open the garage door. The part where the IR unit sits is also known as the eyes and if it’s being obstructed, this can obstruct the IR signal. You can use a cloth to wipe both of these units to make sure that nothings covering them. If they are being covered, then this can stop them from communicating and this will stop the door from opening.

Check If you’re in Range

For the remote to work, you need to be in the IR signal sending range. This range is a few meters outside the garage door opener and if the remote is too far from here, it won’t be in range and the remote won’t work. Make sure that there’s nothing in between the remote and the opener and make sure that you’re only a few meters from the opener. If you’re far down your street trying to get the door open, chances are its not opening because you’re too far away. In this case, you’ll need to get closer.

Reset Remote

There could be a glitch a bug that’s stopping the remote from opening the door. A bug or glitch is a temporary failure in the system and causes unexpected results – in this case, the garage door remote isn’t working. This can be reset by taking the battery out of the case and putting it back in again. This works the same as resetting your phone or computer. Once the battery is back in, it should start to work again.

Reprogramming Remote

In some cases, the remove may just need reprogramming – for reprogramming, you’ll need to refer to the remotes manual and if it’s not available here, you’ll have to check the on the manufacturer’s web site. There’s a general method you can perform to reprogram basic garage door remotes. To do this, you need to:

1. Press and hold the open button while pressing and releasing the programming button.

2. Release the open button when the garage door opener light comes on – this indicates that the garage door remote has been reprogramed and you can start using it again on the garage door.

If none of these steps worked, you’ll need to consult a professional who’ll reprogram or get the remote fixed for you. Sometimes you won’t even have to reprogram the remote, it’ll just start working one day and you’ll be able to open the door with it. This is a weird phenomenon and there’s no known reason why it happens – it could be the hot or cold weather, something blocking the signal, or the current wasn’t flowing through the remotes circuit that day.

Lock Button is ON

Some garage doors openers or panels have a LOCK button. With this on, the receiver’s logic board won’t accept signal from the remote. This is a security feature that stops the garage door from being opened with a remote. To tell if this is on, there’s an indicator light behind the push bar that will flash when the lock switch is turned On – when you press the remote control, the light bulb on the opener will flash twice. If this is the case, you’ll need to deactivate this button so that the receiver can start receiving signal from the remote.

If the Garage Door Closes, But Opens Again

Let’s say your garage door remote is working, but the garage door closes then immediately opens again. Well, it certainly isn’t the remote that’s for sure. But why is it happening? It has to do with sensors that companies started using in the mid-90s. The sensors are life-savers, preventing the garage door from closing completely if it senses something underneath it like a child or your dog.

If the garage door keeps closing, then opening, the sensors are either shot or something is setting the sensor off. Try checking the tracks, just don’t stick your fingers in the tracks. If you aren’t comfortable doing it, don’t! Have a professional come in and give the garage door a look.

Your Garage Door Isn’t Closing

On the other end of the spectrum, the garage door isn’t closing all the way and there’s a noticeable gap. This is something you should immediately address because if left uncheck, wildlife can scurry their way under your garage door or worse, an unsavory individual will take the opportunity to rob your home.

In the event that your garage door doesn’t close completely, you need to adjust the limit switch. It controls how far down the garage door goes and if calibrated incorrectly, it won’t close all the way. Now, there’s a switch on the garage door motor that can be adjusted. If you want the door to close further, you need to set the limit switch lower; a higher setting will only increase the gap.

Because the motor is a delicate piece, you might want a professional to adjust it if you aren’t comfortable doing it. Never perform these tasks if you’re having second doubts or else you could get hurt.

Garage Door Remote Apps

There are garage door remote apps that apps that can use to open the garage door. There are a few apps on the app store and play store that can do this, and they can be useful for times when the remote is acting up. This only works on devices that use IR waves.

Protecting the Garage Door Remote

Just because the remote has stopped working doesn’t mean that you should leave it lying around outside your house. Many people enter their homes through the garage door rather than the front door because this is where you leave your vehicle. This is more convenient, and it can be a nightmare to find out the remote isn’t working. Luckily, you have the garage door opener to open the garage door from, but this is a longer and tedious process.

Although it’s convenient to use the key to get into the garage door, it’s convenient to use the garage door to enter the house, a lot of burglars use this as a way to get into people’s home. This is why you shouldn’t leave the garage door remote lying around in the driveway or locked in your vehicle even though it’s not working. A burglar could easily replace the batteries and use it to get into your home. Make sure that you don’t leave your garage door remote lying around and you can try and take some safety measures to secure the garage door.

Relating to safety, if you have kids, chances are they use the garage door remote a lot simply because it can open the garage door by clicking a button. This can expose children to injury since garage doors are heavy and not to be messed with. It’s important that you keep your children away from the garage door remote once you’ve got it to start working again.

Replacing the Garage Door

If you find that you need to replace the garage door remote – you may have lost it or it could be damaged to the point its not useable anymore, you can easily find a replacement. To do this, you’ll need to contact the manufacturer of the remote or find a replacement online. For popular garage doors like LIFTMASTER, you’ll easily find a replacement. If you want the correct remote that’s compatible with the garage door, you’ll need the model number of the opener – finding an exact replacement can be a long process so you might want to use a universal garage door remote.

Universal Garage Door Remote

Universal garage door remotes like Skylink can be programmed so that they operate on most garage doors – this means that you won’t have to go through the process of finding an exact replacement and you can store up a few universal garage door remotes. These remotes are relatively cheap so they can be a good alternative rather than trying to repair the garage door remote. Garage door remote manufacturers look down on universal remotes because they see it as a security threat to the garage doors but they’re normally secure and don’t pose a threat – some people just don’t like competition.

If you have a remote that isn’t working properly, there’s no reason to looking for a replacement for the opener. If you can’t use the remote, you can use the opener to access the garage door – when there’s a problem with the garage door, this doesn’t have to get replaced. When you’re looking to replace the remote, make sure that you go to a reputable brand that’s secure so that no one but you can have access to the garage door.

Bottom Line

In conclusion, when your garage door remote seemingly does not work, you need to look at more than just the remote itself; the entire mechanism needs to be examined for any faulty wiring, jammed items, locks, or a simple dead battery.
