Technology is supposed to make your life easy, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t malfunction from time to time. Your garage door is probably a great addition to your house. You can go in and out of your garage without getting out of your car. You don’t even have to touch the garage door most of the time because all you do is press the button on the remote and it opens. The thing about the garage door is that sometimes it doesn’t open.
If you have a lot of issues with your garage door, then one of the easiest things to do is call a professional. However, if you can’t wait for a professional to come, then you can try to troubleshoot your garage door yourself. There’s a few reasons why your garage door is not closing and the ways that you can fix them.
Fixing a Garage Door that Won’t Close
Dead Transmitter Batteries
One of the first things you want to check out your garage door transmitter batteries. Your garage door transmitter needs power to work and if it’s dead, then your transmitter won’t be able to send the signal to your garage door so it can open.
Important: As a homeowner, realizing that you need to waste another Saturday waiting for the landlord or handyman to come over to fix another damaged appliance is frustrating. It shouldn't feel like the norm to constantly have damaged appliances and systems in your home since it can come to a huge cost at the end of each year.
The Home Improvement Solutions eBook covers everything you need to do in your home when it comes to maintenance and improvement so you can avoid wasting another weekend waiting for someone to come to your rescue.
You first want to check the transmitter on the wall inside of your garage. Point the remote at it and see if it opens when pressed. If it does, then the transmitter in your car is the one that’s the issue. If it doesn’t, then the transmitter on the garage door needs a change in batteries. If you have more than one car transmitter for your garage door, then you’ll want to check those batteries because they were all installed around the same time. Make sure you get fresh batteries and don’t do any mixing.
Even though locating what batteries need to be changed is a little hard, changing the battery on your garage door transmitters are pretty simple. On most of them, you can slide the back of the garage door transmitter off and remove the batteries. If it isn’t a slide down one, you might need to press a button while sliding it down. Then, on others you need to unscrew them with and it’s best to do this with a cordless screwdriver (View on Amazon).
After using the old batteries, you’ll want to make sure the batteries are lined up with the plus and minus signs correctly. Otherwise, the new batteries won’t work if they are not inserted correctly. Once the batteries are in place and the backs are on, you can test it out if it works.
Misaligned Photo Eye
The photo eye on the garage ensures that the door doesn’t close on anyone. The photo eye acts as a sensor on garage doors made after 1993 which is probably most of them nowadays. Your garage door has too tiny photo eyes on both sides of the garage entrance that transmit a being between each other to see if there’s anything in the garage doors path before it closes. This is a safety measure and post so that it doesn’t close on anyone who happens to be running underneath it.
Does your garage door open normally? If it does, but it doesn’t make any attempt to close when the button is pressed, you’ll want to inspect the photo eyes. Over time, these photo eyes might get dirty and this causes the light that is supposed to be emitted to be blocked. They also might become misaligned, which makes the eyes not able to match up and they won’t be able to emit the light properly to sense what’s happening.
The first thing you want to do is clean the photo eye. You need to be careful not to scratch or damage the eye since it is made out of glass. You want to treat it the same way you would a camera lens or a glasses lens. The photo eye is really small and it’s only a few centimeters wide, but it can collect a lot of dirt. To clean it, get a soft cloth and some cleaner. Wipe away any dirt that has built up on that photo eye and be careful not to wet it excessively. Any excessive wetness on it will cause dirt to stick to it. Make sure it’s dry when you’re done.
If you don’t see any dirt on the photo eyes but the door is still giving you trouble, then you should check the alignment. The photo eyes should be in the same direction and at the same angle. If they’re off even a little bit, they won’t register where the other one is. It will assume that something is in its path, which will cause your door to stay open. When you’re checking the alignment, make sure that you measure the height of each photo eye from the ground. You can use a level to make sure they’re pointing directly across from each other. You can even use a laser level (View on Amazon) to make things easier.
Once you’ve cleaned and aligned the photo eyes, make sure that your door closes and opens normally. If you still have issues, then you might want to call a professional to diagnose the problem with your photo eyes.
Your garage door runs on a track so that it can move. If your garage door track is not aligned, then this is a serious issue that is preventing your garage door from closing. There’s a metal track so the rollers and the rail that move against it. If you see gaps between these rollers and rail or any bends in the rails, then this means you need to fix the track. The door is heavy and it can cause these issues to become worse until it’s actually dangerous to use your garage door.
If the track is misaligned and you see that the door can still move, there are few things you can attempt to fix the issue without calling a professional. If you hear a rubbing noise when the garage door reaches a spot on the tracks each time, then this means that is misaligned. Sometimes you might even see the door slow down when it reaches the spot.
If you want to realign the track, loosen the screws that hold the track to the frame. Use a rubber mallet to tap the track gently, and use that to move it back into its proper position. You can use a level to make it straight. Once you have a correct alignment, then you can tighten the screws to secure the track back in place. You need to repeat this process on all of the other tracks because they might be all out of alignment together.
The door will lose if there’s a really bad alignment issues and if this is the case you should not tackle this yourself. You should call a garage door professionals so that they can use the equipment that they have to safely realign and repair the door. Also if the track misalignment isn’t able to be repaired then the first one that you called can install a entire new track for you. If you do not understand how to align the tracks yourself, definitely call a professional so that you don’t make the situation worse.
Issue with Transmitter
If the batteries Aren’t Dead, then you might have an issue with the transmitter itself.
One of the most common issues is that you’re out of range for your garage door. Each garage door in the transmitter works together in a specific range. If you’re out of this range then it won’t work. For example, you’ll notice this range when you’re trying to open your garage door before you can even see your house. Chances are it won’t open because it’s out of range. Make sure that you’re aware of this range so that you’re in it every time you try to open the garage door.
If you’re in range of the door and it won’t open, make sure that the antenna hanging down from the motor inside your garage isn’t blocked. To receive the signal, your antenna must be free from any obstruction, and if it isn’t, it won’t open and close the door. You should also inspect the antennas to see if there’s any damage. If there’s any bends or issues with the antenna, you’ll need to call the garage door professionals to come out and replace it.
You might need to replace the entire unit. If you think your garage door opens and closes randomly if you’re not hitting the button, then this is a clear solution. However, there is a much simpler solution you can try. Make sure the transmitter isn’t stuck under anything in your car and the button is actually being pushed. This can cause the opening and closings.
Also, if a neighbor’s garage door runs at the same frequency, then they might be opening your garage door along with theirs. Make sure you change your garage doors frequency instead of replacing the entire unit because this is a much easier solution. You might want to look at the model manual for specific instructions on how to change the frequency or if you don’t think you can do it, you can call a garage door professional and they can help you.
You could also reprogram your transmitter. All the transmitters have a learn button on the remote so you can find that and hold it. The learn button needs to be pressed for a few seconds until the indicator starts blinking and then you can press the remote button to reprogram it. This process might vary depending on your model so you want to check the owner’s manual to make sure you don’t need to do anything else. The steps to reset and reprogram your remote shouldn’t be too many so you should get your garage door working again without any hassle.

Broken Springs can also be the issue. If your garage door won’t go up and you’re sure that everything else is working properly, then you might have broken torsion springs.
If you had your garage door for a while, this might be the case. There are four springs and they can only be used for a specific number of open and close cycles. If you’re home when these break, then you should hear a loud bang. Sometimes this thing is so loud that people think a firecracker went off. That’s because the garage doors are heavy and it’s the springs that are holding up the door.
Doors have one or two torsion springs, and if either of them are broken, then the garage door opener will struggle to lift the weight of it. Most of the time, the door fails to open at all. A garage door professional will need to replace the springs because they’re very dangerous to work with. You should not try to open the door until a professional comes to inspect it. The springs are holding up the door and you don’t want it to fall on you or anything else.
Now, you should know what steps to take to have a properly functioning garage door. Make sure that you call a professional to do any repairs that you can’t do yourself.
